Senate Republican Tim Scott criticizes Trump for 'racist' social media message

Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) voiced his criticism of President Donald Trump on Friday regarding posts made on Truth Social, urging their removal. The posts, which Trump highlighted during Thursday night’s broadcast, showed former President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama depicted as monkeys or apes.

Scott, who is the only Black Republican in the Senate, called the portrayal highly offensive. “I hope it’s fake because this is the most racist thing I’ve ever seen in this White House,” he stated, adding that Trump should take the post down.

Interestingly, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, sided with Scott, also demanding Trump’s resignation. Schumer labeled the post as “racist, despicable, and dangerous,” emphasizing the need for Trump to apologize to the Obamas.

Scott and Trump have generally maintained a supportive relationship, especially since Trump pursued the Republican presidential nomination last year, where Scott was even a consideration for the vice presidential slot before Trump opted for J.D. Vance.

Additionally, Scott has become a significant figure in the Senate, currently chairing the National Republican Senatorial Committee, where he is focused on retaining and growing Republican support leading up to the 2026 midterms.

Despite this incident, Scott has previously aligned with Trump, even defending Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell amidst a DOJ investigation. He expressed in a recent interview that while his committee found Powell incompetent, he did not believe any crime had occurred during Powell’s testimony.

The White House has yet to respond to inquiries regarding Scott’s comments.
