Senate Declares October 14, 2025, as National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk
The US Senate has unanimously passed a resolution spearheaded by Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) to designate October 14, 2025, as a day to honor the contributions of Charlie Kirk and the principles he championed, including faith and freedom of speech. This date is significant because it aligns with what would have been Kirk’s 32nd birthday.
The resolution was adopted on September 18 and also references the tragic events of September 10, where Kirk was fatally shot during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University while engaging with students.
Scott’s initiative had support from over 20 other senators, showcasing a broad bipartisan recognition. Among the co-sponsors were Senators from various states, including Jim Lisch (R-ID), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), and Ted Cruz (R-TX). Back in Florida, Representative Jimmy Patronis (R-FL) introduced a corresponding resolution.
On the Senate floor, Scott described Kirk as “a good guy, a respectful husband, a father, a friend.” He reminisced about Kirk’s commitment to weekly outreach and discussions on college campuses, emphasizing Kirk’s belief in the power of ideas to inspire change. Scott stated, “On October 14th, we will gather as a nation and pay tribute to his great life.”
The legal text of the resolution acknowledges Kirk’s role in civic education and promotes the designation of October 14, 2025, as a day to reflect on his legacy. It encourages schools and civic organizations to conduct programs and activities that foster civic engagement and uphold democratic values.
Patronis, in his comments on the resolution, praised Kirk as a “fearless advocate of faith and freedom,” arguing that a national day in his name would ensure his legacy inspires future generations to speak truthfully and courageously.
This latest move follows previous commendations from the Senate. Just last week, lawmakers unanimously passed another resolution introduced by Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), which condemned Kirk’s assassination and expressed condolences to his family. Lee remarked that he wanted Kirk remembered as a “champion of freedom of speech and truth,” aiming for a unified stance on fundamental civic principles.
Kirk founded Turning Point USA back in 2012, which has since become one of the largest student advocacy groups in the nation, promoting free markets and limited government intervention. He authored several popular books and was known for engaging with students across the political spectrum.
Former President Donald Trump and noted leaders, including Vice President JD Vance, have publicly recognized Kirk’s impact, describing his death as a “dark moment in America” while praising his dedication to civil discourse. Further tributes include plans for a statue at the New College in Florida to honor Kirk’s life and contributions.
