Proposed Federal Minimum Wage Increase

Senator Josh Hawley from Missouri, along with Senator Peter Welch from Vermont, is sponsoring legislation aimed at raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour. This would also include annual adjustments based on inflation.

The move represents a significant jump from the current minimum wage of $7.25, which has remained unchanged for more than 15 years.

“For decades, working Americans have seen their wages stagnate, and a big reason for this is that the federal minimum wage hasn’t kept pace with the economic challenges faced by hardworking individuals,” the lawmakers stated in a press release.

They noted that inflation has severely eroded the purchasing power of the U.S. dollar over time.

The proposed legislation outlines that the annual increase for the new minimum wage would be linked to the “rate of increase in the consumer price index for urban wage workers and administrative workers (or successor index)” from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. If the increase isn’t a multiple of $0.05, it will be rounded to the nearest increment.

“This bipartisan law will ensure workers across America benefit from higher wages,” Senator Hawley commented regarding the proposed wage increase.

Senator Welch echoed this sentiment, stating that annual adjustments for inflation are crucial. “We are in the midst of a severe affordability crisis, with families from both red and blue states struggling to afford basic needs like housing and groceries. Stagnant federal minimum wages just worsen the situation,” he continued.

“Times are changing, and working families need wages that reflect the financial realities of today. I’m proud to lead this bipartisan effort to raise the minimum wage so more people can achieve their goals,” he added.

However, not everyone is on board with this initiative. Conservative commentator Dana Loesch criticized the wage increase in a recent post on social media, labeling it a “scary, progressive idea.”
