Keillor Challenges Dr. Shah’s Record Amid Senate Candidacy
CNN host Brianna Keillor took Dr. Nirav Shah to task on Friday, sharply criticizing his record after Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth challenged Shah’s candidacy for the Senate in Maine. Duckworth’s objections come in light of Shah’s prior leadership during a severe outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in Illinois, a situation that resulted in multiple fatalities.
Shah, who finished second in Maine’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, is facing backlash from some members of his own party about his past actions. Duckworth, also a military veteran, has previously highlighted his administration’s failures during the outbreak while he was at the helm of the Illinois Department of Public Health.
On Thursday, Duckworth stated, “Maine deserves better than someone who puts his public image above the safety of our veterans. Too many heroes have died under Nirav Shah’s watch. I called for his resignation back then, and I’m firmly against his Senate run now.”
During Friday’s segment, Keillor pointed out Duckworth’s criticisms, asking Shah for his thoughts on her remarks. She referenced a particular incident from 2015 when a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at a veterans’ facility led to 13 deaths.
Shah responded, acknowledging the tragic nature of the incident. “I deeply respect Senator Duckworth and her service, but I must respectfully disagree with her interpretation. The Department of Health reacts to emergency scenarios much like a fire department would,” he explained. He insisted they acted swiftly to contain the outbreak, emphasizing the thorough reviews conducted by the CDC following the incident. Shah also mentioned receiving roles in public health from both Maine’s governor and the Biden administration afterwards.
Keillor retorted, stating the comparison to fire departments was misleading, noting their reputation for rapid responses. “From what we’re hearing, the Illinois Comptroller General did a thorough investigation that disputes your depiction of the response at that time,” she said.
Exploring further, Keillor questioned how voters in Maine could trust Shah, pointing out discrepancies in responses to the health crisis. Shah countered her claims, asserting that local health officials contacted facilities as the situation progressed. “The county health department was involved right from the start,” he stated.
Shah also defended his record during the COVID-19 pandemic, arguing he has emerged as a stronger leader because of his experiences. “Leadership can’t be flawless; what’s important is learning from those tough situations. I’ve improved through my experiences,” he concluded.
