Kennedy Faces Criticism During Senate Hearing

During a recent Senate Finance Committee hearing, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. found himself in the midst of a heated discussion. Senator Ron Wyden, representing Oregon, accused Kennedy of endangering children with his policies and suggested that Kennedy showed no remorse for his actions.

Wyden emphasized, “This is about the damage caused by reckless and repeated choices that prioritize conspiracy theories over public health.” He expressed skepticism about Kennedy’s intentions, asking if he would acknowledge the harm done. “You seem fundamentally cruel and are willing to sacrifice the well-being of children to push an agenda that defies common sense,” Wyden concluded.

Kennedy responded, questioning Wyden’s long tenure and lack of action regarding the rising chronic illness rates in children, which have surged by 76%. “You said nothing while this was happening,” he asserted. Additionally, he expressed disbelief at learning, for the first time in two decades, that infant mortality rates have also increased in the country.

As the tension rose, Committee Chairman Mike Krapo stepped in, allowing Wyden another chance to speak, despite his microphone still being off. He noted, “I gave Senator Wyden a bit of room as a ranking member, but I’m going to adhere to the time limit,” attempting to manage the debate.

This confrontation follows a significant moment when over 1,000 current and former HHS employees called for Kennedy’s resignation, alongside similar demands from Senator Bernie Sanders. Critics highlighted concerns surrounding health policies under Kennedy’s leadership, asserting, “We believe health policies should be driven by solid, evidence-based principles, not by political agendas.”
