Explosion at Fireworks Facility in California

A violent explosion at a fireworks facility in Yolo County, California, on Tuesday evening has left hundreds without power and seven individuals unaccounted for. The incident occurred just before 6 PM local time at the Espart commercial fireworks site.

At least two people sustained injuries, and during a press conference on Wednesday, Esparto Fire Chief Curtis Lawrence stated that firefighters initially entered the facility but had to retreat due to severe risks involved.

Officials have yet to reenter the building to search for the missing individuals, opting instead to deploy drones for aerial reconnaissance amid the extensive debris.

It remains unclear if the missing individuals belong to the facility’s staff, but it has been confirmed that no firefighters were harmed in the blast.

Lawrence highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the safety of the scene, noting that officials are cautious about allowing firefighters to return.

Over 30 firefighters responded to the initial emergency, though only a few remained at the location by Wednesday afternoon.

“I’ve never encountered anything like this,” said Lawrence, emphasizing the scale of the incident. “Our next priority is to work with the command team to minimize the exclusion zone, allowing members to return home safely and aiding recovery efforts when it’s deemed safe.”

Evacuation orders are still in effect for two nearby areas, leaving over 150 customers without electricity.

Lawrence expressed gratitude for the response from volunteers, stating, “We are a small community with primarily volunteer responders, and I feel grateful and proud of everyone who came out to help yesterday and today.”

Cal Fire confirmed that the building is owned by a licensed fireworks operator, though the owner’s identity has not yet been disclosed. An arson and bomb investigation team has been dispatched to the site by the office of the former state firefighters, as noted by Governor Gavin Newsom’s office.

As of Wednesday afternoon, 78.3 acres have burned, with containment reported at 0%. Authorities have yet to disclose what caused the fire.
