Authorities later apprehended a suspect in relation to the incidents.
Initially, the MPD, in coordination with the U.S. Park Police and the National Park Service, had planned to close the area for public safety reasons. Reports indicated that Dupont Circle Park was to be closed for the entire Pride weekend.
The decision was framed as a response to previous incidents of disorderly conduct, including vandalism during the last Pride celebration. Many local officials and residents voiced their frustration, deeming the closure unnecessary.
DC Council member Zachary Parker expressed his indignation on social media, stating that the situation was both “unnecessary and infuriating.”
Such a measure doesn’t actually reflect the needs or importance of Dupont Circle for our community.

Another council member, Charles Allen, reiterated the park’s significance within the context of DC Pride celebrations and suggested adjustments that could allow the park to remain open without compromising safety.
This would be a wrong move. Dupont Circle is vital to our Pride events, and alternatives should be explored.

Following the public outcry, the decision to close Dupont Circle was reversed. A joint statement from the NPS and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser indicated that a collaborative effort would ensure that the park remains safe and accessible during the celebrations.
They expressed satisfaction at reaching a solution that balances park preservation with public enjoyment: “We want to make this a safe and joyous weekend for everyone and look forward to future collaborations for maintaining the beauty and safety of Washington, D.C.”
