Tragic Incident in Texas: Three Brothers Lose Lives
In a heartbreaking event, three brothers, ages 6, 8, and 9, drowned after falling into an icy pond during a severe winter storm that swept through the United States, according to local authorities.
The boys fell into a private pond on Monday, located just north of Bonham, a small town near the Oklahoma border, as noted by the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office.
Rescue workers and nearby residents managed to pull the two older brothers from the water, while an extensive search ultimately located the youngest sibling, as reported by the sheriff.
Their mother, Cheyenne Hungaman, recounted to local news that her younger sister rushed to the scene in an attempt to save her sons.
Prior to the incident, she and her children were staying at a friend’s home situated across from the pond.
“I started running towards the pond and jumped in to try to save them. The water was freezing, so I just tried to keep myself alive,” Hungaman shared, explaining how overwhelming the situation became the moment she jumped in.
She expressed her feelings of helplessness, saying, “I really couldn’t do much. It was just one of me and three of them. They all needed me at once, and I couldn’t save them.”
A man who witnessed the tragedy intervened and was able to throw her a rope, assisting her in getting out of the icy water.
All three boys were students in the Bonham Independent School District, which had canceled classes on Monday due to the extreme cold. The district remained closed on Tuesday as well, citing hazardous conditions, including icy roads and frigid temperatures.
Superintendent Lance Hamlin expressed condolences in a letter to parents, stating, “We are devastated by this unimaginable loss, and our thoughts are with the families, friends, and everyone who knew and loved these children.”
As of Tuesday, a thin layer of ice still sat over most of the pond in the wooded area.
Reports indicate that over 40 fatalities have occurred in various states as a result of the harsh cold snap affecting the region.
