Shakira Acquitted of Tax Evasion Charges
Shakira has been found not guilty in a tax evasion case after what she describes as an “eight-year ordeal.” This verdict comes with significant financial implications for her.
The singer, who previously faced a $64 million fine in 2021, will not only have that amount reimbursed but will also receive additional compensation to cover the fine and interest. Reports indicate that her total compensation will exceed $70 million.
The judge ruled that authorities failed to establish that Shakira spent more than 183 days in Spain in 2011, which is the criterion for being deemed a tax resident there.
Celebrating this win, the 49-year-old artist remarked that there was “no cheating” involved in her situation. In a statement, she expressed the toll this legal battle has taken on her personal life, saying, “After enduring more than eight years of brutal public targeting, a systematic campaign to destroy my reputation, and sleepless nights that ultimately affected my health and the well-being of my family, the National High Court has finally set the record straight.”
Her attorney, Jose Luis Prada, characterized the verdict as a long-awaited relief, highlighting the case’s unreasonably harsh impact on her life and career.
However, the IRS reportedly intends to appeal to the Supreme Court, meaning Shakira may not receive her compensation until a final ruling is made.
This legal battle began for Shakira in 2018, and she has consistently maintained her innocence regarding accusations of failing to pay over $15.8 million in taxes from 2012 to 2014.
In November 2023, she reached a settlement with the Spanish government, agreeing to pay $15 million. She had mentioned doing so for the sake of her children, Milan and Sasha, expressing a desire to protect them from the stress of the situation. The children reportedly did not want to see their mother suffer from the strain of the ongoing legal fight.
Reflecting on her choices, she stated in September 2024 that her decisions were made to ensure a better future for her family, emphasizing that her actions were rooted in strength, not weakness.
In other news, Shakira recently made headlines for being selected as one of the halftime show performers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, alongside major artists like Madonna and K-pop band BTS. However, this decision has sparked some controversy among fans who expressed frustration over the show’s Americanization.
