Shapiro on Harris’ chances in Pennsylvania: 'Every election is close’

Asked Sunday about the likelihood of a Harris victory, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (Democrat) said, “Every election here is close.”

“What are the chances right now that Kamala Harris will win Pennsylvania?” CNN host Dana Bash asked Shapiro on “State of the Union.”

“Every election in Pennsylvania is close. In 2016, it was about 44,000 votes. In 2020, it was 80,000 votes. Both elections were decided by one point or less,” Shapiro replied.

“I believe this election will be close. I think the vice president has a strong push, to be honest with you. And what I'm watching is the rise of Kamala Harris in communities that are often ignored and left behind.”

In Pennsylvania, Ms. Harris is narrowly ahead of former President Trump, with 48.1% approval rating to Trump's 47.7% in an average of The Hill/Decision Desk polls, one of a handful of key battleground states that Ms. Harris may need to win to secure the presidency.

“So I'm really hopeful and really optimistic, [it’s gonna be] “This will end here in the Keystone State,” Shapiro said during “State of the Union.”

Harris and Trump debated in Philadelphia earlier this week in what many saw as a positive night for the vice president: A CNN early poll found that 63% of registered voters said Harris performed well in the debate, while only about 37% said the same about the former president.

The Hill has reached out to the Harris campaign.
