Shapiro says Musk plan to award $1 million to Pennsylvania voters who sign his petition is ‘deeply concerning’

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) said tech billionaire Elon Musk's plan to give away $1 million to voters who signed America PAC petitions ahead of Election Day was “very concerning.” “

“I think there are big questions about how he's spending money in this race. How the dark money is flowing, not just into Pennsylvania, but obviously now into the pockets of Pennsylvanians. “I'm here,” Shapiro said Sunday on NBC News' “Meet the Press.” “That's very concerning.”

Musk, a supporter of former President Trump, announced his plans on Saturday. He is asking people to sign a petition supporting free speech and the right to bear arms.

“The only thing we're asking for $1 million is for you to be a spokesperson for the petition,” Musk said.

Shapiro said Musk, who publicly supports Trump and attends rallies with him, has the right to express his opinions even if they disagree.

“He's made it very clear that he supports Donald Trump. Obviously that's not the case, we have disagreements,” Shapiro said. “I don't deny him.”

Still, Shapiro expressed concerns about Musk's funding and interference in the presidential election.

“I think this raises serious questions that people might want to consider,” he said.

NBC News' Kristin Welker pressed Shapiro on whether Musk's plan was legal. Shapiro, a former Pennsylvania attorney general, said he could not weigh in on the issue.

“I think this is something that law enforcement can look into,” he said.
