Shaquille O’Neal’s Take on NBA Connections

If you’re an NBA player hoping for a text from Shaquille O’Neal, you might want to manage your expectations. O’Neal, now 54, recently explained why he doesn’t keep in touch with athletes, either past or present. “That’s not true. I hate athletes and superstars because they’re boring,” O’Neal remarked.

He reflected on his earlier feelings, criticizing his own fame a decade ago because he found celebrities to be strange people. “I’m not a weirdo,” he asserted, emphasizing his desire for genuine interactions and respect for others. Despite his basketball prowess, O’Neal pursued his education after retiring, completing his bachelor’s degree, and earning an MBA and a PhD in Education. Yet, he notes that some people doubt the authenticity of his doctorate.

“The funniest thing for me is, ‘Oh, that’s an honor.’ I say, ‘No, it’s not.’ I had to go to school and write papers and all that stuff,” he shared. O’Neal’s message is clear: while he has achieved significant success, he values the importance of education and wants to instill that belief in young people.

Despite his illustrious basketball career—winning four NBA championships and being a 15-time All-Star—O’Neal remains actively involved in discussions about young athletes today. He pointed out concerns regarding their focus on earning money without the knowledge to manage it wisely. It’s a perspective that reflects his ongoing commitment to character and education, both on and off the court.
