Shein Investigates Use of Controversial Image in Advertising

Shein, the well-known fashion retailer, has launched an inquiry following the use of a photo featuring Luigi Mangion in its promotional materials. This image, reportedly of a model wearing a white short-sleeve shirt, drew attention when it was linked to the ongoing case against Mangion, who is suspected of murdering Brian Thompson, the CEO of United Healthcare in New York.

The company began investigating after a photograph surfaced on their website depicting the shirt, which sells for just under $11. A spokesperson for Shein confirmed to BBC News that the image in question was sourced from a third-party vendor and was removed promptly once the issue was recognized.

“We maintain strict standards for every listing on our platform,” the spokesperson added, though details about the image and vendor have been scant. Shein mentioned they have enhanced their monitoring processes and will enforce their policies with vendors accordingly.

The timeline regarding when the image initially appeared on the site or who provided it remains unclear. There have been speculations about whether the images might have been generated using artificial intelligence, but it’s difficult to draw any solid conclusions at this point. A facial recognition analysis from Amazon Rekognition showed a 99.9% similarity between the posted images and verified photos of Mangion from court records.

Mangion’s case has captured significant media attention, with public outrage growing against private insurance companies as discussions around the murder of Thompson unfolded online.

In April, federal charges, including murder and stalking, were brought against the 26-year-old, to which Mangion pleaded not guilty. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondy announced intentions to pursue the death penalty should he be convicted.
