Former Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown Wins Democratic Senate Nomination for 2026
Former Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown has secured the Democratic nomination for the 2026 Senate race, according to reports. Brown, who had a lengthy 30-year tenure in Congress, previously lost his re-election bid to current Republican Senator Bernie Moreno in 2024. He is now set to face off against Republican Senator Jon Husted, Ohio’s former lieutenant governor, who was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Vice President J.D. Vance.
The victor of this upcoming election will complete the remaining two years of Vance’s Senate term. Vance resigned from the House after winning a Senate seat in 2022 alongside President Donald Trump, who took the presidency in the 2024 elections.
The Ohio Senate race is particularly significant, as it could influence whether Republicans maintain their narrow majority in the Senate or if Democrats can reclaim control for the first time in four years.
Brown triumphed over strong competition from Ron Kincaid, an IT expert and coach for the Special Olympics, to clinch the Democratic nomination. Meanwhile, Husted ran uncontested in the Republican primary.
“Ohioans are tired of corruption and greed in Washington. They deserve a senator who will fight for working families, not CEOs and billionaires,” Brown expressed via social media following his primary success. He seems poised, stating, “That’s why we’re going to win this November.”
On the other hand, after receiving praise from President Trump on social media, Husted thanked the former president, saying, “Your support for Ohio jobs means a lot to our state’s hardworking citizens.” He further highlighted the Working Families Tax Cut as beneficial for Ohio families.
As it stands, Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate. It’s worth noting that Ohio was once a competitive battleground state, but recent trends indicate a shift to the right, notably with Trump’s significant lead in the state during the last election. Nevertheless, both the Senate and gubernatorial races this year are anticipated to be highly contested.
