Gunfight in Kansas Leaves Four Officers Injured; Suspect Identified

A rural Kansas gunfight has resulted in injuries to four police officers, and the deceased suspect has been named as 22-year-old Stephen McMillan. Interestingly, McMillan’s grandfather also sustained injuries during the incident, according to local authorities.

On Saturday at around 10:24 a.m., officers from the Osage County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol responded to a farmhouse in Carbondale after a woman inside reported a “domestic disturbance” via 911.

When they arrived, officers encountered McMillan outside the residence. A shootout quickly erupted between him and the responding officers, as officials later revealed. Col. Eric Smith of the Kansas Highway Patrol noted that gunshots were heard less than ten minutes after their arrival.

During the confrontation, both three police officers and two members of the KHP returned fire, and all were hit. McMillan was shot and was later pronounced dead.

According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, as of now, it remains unclear when McMillan’s grandfather—who is 77 years old—was shot. He was also taken to the hospital following the incident.

Two deputies from the Osage County Sheriff’s Office underwent surgery but are in good condition. A third deputy has since been released from the hospital, and one member of the KHP who was shot has also returned home.

Reportedly, McMillan’s grandfather is expected to recover from his injuries. A neighbor described the family as “wonderful” and expressed disbelief at McMillan’s actions, saying, “I never imagined he would do something like this.”

The investigation is still active, and as of yet, a motive for the shooting has not been determined.
