On Thursday, a detective from a California sheriff’s department was shot dead while delivering an eviction notice. The incident unfolded when a suspect opened fire during what appears to be an ambush on the deputies.
According to Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreau, the shooting occurred around 10:40 a.m. in Porterville. Officers confronted a man named David Morales, who reportedly fired at them with a high-powered rifle.
As of Thursday, the suspect remained barricaded, resulting in an ongoing standoff with law enforcement.
The detective was rushed to Sierra View Regional Hospital, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at 11:57 a.m. Boudreau expressed disbelief at the situation, saying, “This went from a civil eviction order to a police officer being shot and killed. It makes no sense.”
Authorities had initially considered airlifting the detective to a hospital in Fresno, but, tragically, his condition was too critical for safe transport.
Boudreau revealed that Morales hadn’t paid rent for 35 days, and deputies were in the process of handling a final eviction notice when the shooting took place.
The sheriff’s office indicated that Morales seemed to have been lying in wait for the officers, which led to a call for additional support. Boudreau reflected on the impact this had on families, particularly his wife’s, expressing helplessness in comforting them during such a tragic event. “This type of attack on law enforcement must stop,” he asserted.
Several law enforcement agencies from the surrounding area came to assist during the confrontation and arranged for an escort to transport the fallen detective from the hospital to the coroner’s office.
