Shooting at World Cup Viewing Event in San Jose
On Sunday afternoon in San Jose, California, a shooting at a World Cup viewing party resulted in one death and left another person critically injured, despite the area’s existing gun restrictions.
The incident took place shortly after 2 p.m., as reported. This specific location was a designated “fan zone,” although the game was not actively being shown at that moment.
The San Jose Police Department confirmed on social media that one victim was declared dead at the scene, while a second individual was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Authorities are treating the case as a homicide investigation.
Interestingly, California has some of the strictest gun laws in the country yet has faced a high number of mass shootings, ranking first for such incidents in both 2021 and 2023, according to FBI data.
A brief overview of the state’s regulations includes requirements for concealed carry permits, universal background checks, a 10-day waiting period for firearm purchases, registration mandates, and bans on certain types of weapons and high-capacity magazines. Additionally, there are limits on the number of firearms one can buy each month and an excise tax on gun and ammunition sales.
Ultimately, despite these laws, they didn’t prevent the tragic outcomes of Sunday’s shooting in San Jose.
