Two women were shot on the Upper East Side, one of them dead and the other survived, while a child was sitting in the back seat of a nearby car, police and sources said.
The two victims were shot just before 9 a.m. on East 88th Street near York Avenue in an apparent domestic violence-related incident, police and officials said.
Officials said one person was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
A 4-year-old child was in the back seat of the car at the time, but it was unclear whether the deadly assault occurred inside or outside the vehicle, officials said.
Witnesses told The Washington Post that they initially thought the gunfire was coming from nearby Gracie Mansion.
“I heard screams, then gunshots, and I ran in the front door for cover,” the man said, as sirens rang out all around him. “I looked around and saw a grey-haired woman lying on the sidewalk. I thought maybe something had happened near Gracie Mansion and she’d been hit by a stray bullet.”
“But as I got closer I saw another woman lying in the back of the car who had also been shot,” he added. “There was a 4-year-old child in the car. I called 911 and police and paramedics were there very quickly.”
Witnesses said the woman on the sidewalk was older and appeared to have suffered more serious injuries, possibly from a shot to the head.
The young woman in the street was “breathing lightly at the time,” he said.
Further details were not immediately released.
