Incident in Atlanta: A Fatal Series of Shootings
A man suspected of carrying out a range of deadly shootings in suburban Atlanta, including the killing of a Homeland Security officer, died in custody before investigators could establish a motive.
Olaolukitan Adon Abel, 26, was discovered unresponsive in his cell at DeKalb County Jail around 6:48 p.m. Authorities attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead about half an hour later, according to the sheriff’s office.
“There’s no sign of criminal activity or foul play,” the sheriff’s office mentioned, adding that the medical examiner will determine the official cause of death. They also stated that an internal investigation is underway, following department policy.
Adon Abel faces charges related to a shooting that led to the deaths of 31-year-old Prianna Weathers and 40-year-old DHS auditor Lauren Bliss. Additionally, prosecutors were moving forward with another murder charge after 49-year-old Tony Matthews succumbed to his injuries sustained in the incident.
So far, investigators have not unearthed a clear motive and are unsure if the suspect knew any of the victims. Authorities have noted that at least one of the shootings might have been random.
Interestingly, neighbors reported that Adon Abel had an argument with his roommates over the air conditioning shortly before he left their apartment in a huff.
The timeline of the violent spree began just after 12:50 a.m. on April 13 when DeKalb County police discovered Weathers, who had been shot multiple times, in the Decatur area.
The violence then escalated to Brookhaven, where Matthews was ambushed and shot multiple times outside a business center. It culminated gruesomely around 6:50 a.m. in Panthersville when Bliss was found, shot and stabbed. Witnesses claimed to have seen a man standing over her before running away.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirmed that Bliss “was brutally shot and stabbed to death” and identified Adon Abel as the suspect. Interestingly enough, he became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2022 and has a criminal record that includes sexual assault and assault on police officers.
Originally from the UK, Adon Abel became a U.S. citizen while serving in the Navy in San Diego.
This case raises important questions about the federal government’s vetting processes, especially given recent admissions of gaps under the previous administration.
