Peter Thiel: Silicon Valley’s Enigmatic Figure
Peter Thiel often leaves people scratching their heads. He’s a billionaire, a Republican backing Trump, a married gay man, a transhumanist, and, interestingly, a self-described “Christian.”
Thiel openly states his belief in Christianity and regards Christ as the ultimate example to follow. He is active in numerous Christian organizations while simultaneously embracing transhumanism, envisioning a future where humanity overcomes death through technology. This perspective twists the traditional concept of the glorified bodies Christians talk about after death, according to Blazetv host Allie Beth Stuckey.
Recently, Thiel sparked conversation with his seminar discussing the Antichrist. This combines his unique theological views with his take on technology and transhumanism. Thiel postulates that the beasts mentioned in the Apocalypse are fundamentally linked to artificial intelligence. He suggests that whether through control, a fabricated system, or a person utilizing AI to establish global order, AI will significantly influence humanity’s end.
Interestingly, Thiel isn’t alone in this view. Many have discussed the potential relationship between AI and the Antichrist, with some asserting they might even be synonymous. When considering how AI could dominate globally, manipulate economies, and perpetuate false promises, the theory doesn’t seem entirely outlandish.
But does Thiel’s theological perspective have any real value? Should it warrant our attention?
In a recent episode of “Relatable,” Allie Beth Stuckey examined Thiel’s theory on the Antichrist. Her takeaway? It’s not straightforward.
During a chat on the “Interesting Times” podcast with New York Times columnist Ross Douthat, Thiel portrayed the Antichrist as a broad systemic danger rather than a singular figure. He speculated it might arise as a global totalitarian regime that offers peace and security while curtailing freedom, Stuckey points out.
Thiel elaborated on how the Antichrist could exploit fears surrounding technology, like rogue AI, to persuade individuals to accept a powerful centralized authority—likely driven by AI. Essentially, this figure (or entity) would convince the masses that the only way to ensure security and peace globally is to unify under a centralized power.
Yet, there are notable inconsistencies. Thiel co-founded Palantir Technologies, which creates very technologies that could serve as a counter to humanity.
Douthat highlighted this contradiction during their discussion, pointing out Thiel’s substantial investments in AI, military tech, and surveillance systems.
Another clear contradiction lies in Thiel’s backing of transhumanism, which seeks to meld humans with machines for immortality—the very kind of technology he warns might be weaponized by an Antichrist.
What’s the deal with that?
After hearing about Thiel’s theory, Stuckey raised her concerns. Thiel’s argument seems to be that as the Antichrist aims to halt technological progress to consolidate power, the solution is to keep investing in and advancing technology.
“It’s fascinating, and maybe a bit sketchy, that those who profit from tech argue that halting innovation signals the arrival of the Antichrist,” she noted.
But more crucially, do biblical texts provide evidence of what the Antichrist might look like?
The Bible characterizes the Antichrist as a “lawless man” (2 Thessalonians 2) who wields authority over all nations and languages (Revelation 13) and ultimately opposes God. This figure serves as a precursor to Christ’s Second Coming.
“So Thiel’s argument seems to suggest that this figure can rally people by presenting a façade of strength and authority,” Stuckey said.
“Could this individual leverage the threat of Armageddon, powered by AI, to amass power? I’d say it’s possible. But does he truly embody a phor for issues like technological stagnation or climate change? The Antichrist is, after all, a tangible being,” she explains.
Stuckey found it amusing that Thiel is discussing these topics and encourages him—and everyone else—to connect more deeply with God.
