Simone Biles Addresses Controversy with Riley Gaines
American Olympic gymnast Simone Biles recently issued an apology to swimmer Riley Gaines amid a heated discussion on women’s sports that played out over social media. Biles expressed regret over the personal nature of their exchanges last weekend.
“I’ve always felt that fairness and inclusion are crucial in sports,” she stated. “The way things are structured right now doesn’t seem to give these principles the respect they deserve, leading to some, I guess, frustrating and heated back-and-forths. I realize that making it personal with Riley didn’t help matters.” This came from a message she posted on X.
Biles acknowledged the sensitivity and complexity of these issues, clarifying that she didn’t have definite answers or solutions. “It begins with empathy and respect,” she said. “I’m not supporting policies that undermine equity in women’s sports. Children, in particular, shouldn’t be thrust into the spotlight in a way that feels harmful.” She emphasized that young athletes shouldn’t bear the brunt of critique aimed at flawed systems they don’t control.
“I think it’s the responsibility of sports organizations to establish rules that encourage inclusion while still ensuring fair competition,” Biles added, reflecting on a vision where sports can be fair, inclusive, and respectful.
The exchange between Biles and Gaines began after Biles criticized Gaines regarding a Minnesota State High School League’s decision to disable comments on championship posts, ostensibly due to the involvement of a transgender athlete. Gaines, in her response, remarked on the absurdity of the situation, questioning what was to be expected when a male athlete was featured as a star player.
Gaines had previously competed against Lia Thomas—a transgender athlete—in 2022 and offered Biles a chance to join her podcast, “Gaines for Girls,” to discuss these pertinent issues further.
After Biles’s apology, Gaines acknowledged it, calling Biles “still the greatest female gymnast ever,” while also reiterating that sports are inherently inclusive. However, she pointed out the contradiction in the notion of “competitive fairness,” arguing it often excludes. “If female athletes are expected to be silent in these discussions, it seems unfair,” she stressed.
Gaines further contended that empathy should extend to all athletes, regardless of gender identity, and emphasized the need not to overlook the challenges faced by young men who may struggle as well. She added, “I’m not ashamed to speak out on this matter.” In a follow-up, Gaines applauded Biles for her apology but highlighted that both of them share a responsibility to raise these issues.
In closing, Gaines encouraged the dialogue around protecting women in sports and criticized policies that may inadvertently harm female athletes, suggesting that young girls deserve equal opportunities. “Every little girl should have the same opportunities I had,” she concluded.
