WASHINGTON — In an exciting matchup on Sunday at Capital One Arena, the New York Sirens triumphed over the Montreal Victoires with a score of 2-1. Kristina Kartonkova and Anne Czerkowski each found the net, and Cale Osborne showcased his skill by making 31 saves.
The game attracted a record crowd of 17,228 fans, setting a new attendance record for a women’s professional hockey game in the U.S., surpassing the previous record of 16,014 set during Seattle Trent’s first home game on November 28.
This loss ended Montreal’s three-game winning streak.
New York’s Sarah Fillier contributed two assists, and the Sirens improved their record to 7-0-1-5, marking five wins in their last six games. They now sit with 22 points, trailing league leaders Boston by four and Minnesota by just one point.
Kartonkova, the top pick in the 2025 PWHL Draft, continues to impress, currently tied for the most goals in the league with Minnesota’s Kendall Coyne Schofield, both having nine goals this season.
Maggie Flaherty scored the sole power play goal for the Victoires late in the first period.
Kartonkova opened the scoring just 84 seconds into the game by tapping in a rebound from Fillier’s shot. Despite their efforts, the Sirens struggled with their power play, failing to convert on their last nine opportunities; they are 5-for-40 this season with the extra skaters.
Czerkowski extended the Sirens’ lead to 2-1 with 5:13 remaining in the second period. It was an impressive play where Fillier set up a face-off, leading to Czerkowski’s first career goal, which was redirected over the goaltender Anne-Renee Desbiens’ shoulder.
Deviance, the Victoires’ goalie, made 25 saves in the contest.
It’s worth noting that back on November 25, the Victoires had a decisive 4-0 win over New York, with Osborne making a career-high 43 saves. Additionally, the Sirens had tied this season’s series earlier with a 4-3 victory at home on January 2. Up next, the Sirens are set to host Ottawa on Tuesday.
