Wrestling Community Mourns Shiva Afi’s Passing

The wrestling world is grieving the loss of Shiva Afi, who was also known as Paparitere Max Amata Taogaga. He died at the age of 77.

His family confirmed the tragic news on Thursday, though the cause of death has not been disclosed.

Afi, affectionately nicknamed “Superfly,” joined the World Wrestling Federation in 1986, where he was introduced as a cousin of the famous wrestler Jimmy Snuka.

In the early stages of his career, Afi enjoyed some success. However, fans never really embraced him the way Vince McMahon had envisioned, leading to his eventual departure from the organization.

Before making his mark in the WWF, Afi had participated in nearly 30 matches with New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Interestingly, it was in Hawaii that he really started to gain recognition.

One notable moment came when he managed to hold Ric Flair to a stalemate in a one-hour match for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.

His life story took a turn when he was convicted on multiple charges including aggravated robbery and kidnapping in Ohio, serving as a getaway driver in a 1996 incident.

Ultimately, Afi received a sentence of 15 to 40 years in prison. After several appeals, he was deported back to Samoa a decade later.

Upon his return, he dedicated himself to community work and rehabilitation programs.

When the news of his death arrived on Thursday, the wrestling community quickly shared memories of the beloved “Superfly.”

In a heartfelt message, wrestling writer Dave Meltzer expressed sadness over the loss, highlighting Afi’s famous match against Ric Flair at Aloha Stadium, which attracted a record crowd in Hawaii. A family member, Hitoro Okesene, expressed grief over the passing of a beloved uncle, recalling fond memories that spanned from watching wrestling to more personal moments.

Book Pro Wrestlers, an account focused on wrestler bookings, also expressed sorrow, stating, “We are saddened by the passing of Shiva Afi. His remarkable life included his time in the WWF and roles as a bodyguard and stuntman for Burt Reynolds.”

As tributes pour in, it’s clear he was not just a talent in the ring but a respected figure among his peers. Many recalled him as a genuinely kind person, saying, “Rest in peace, Shiva Affi. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
