Six Lives Lost, Including a Mother and Her Daughters, in Russian Attacks

Recent Russian Drone and Missile Attacks in Ukraine

KYIV, Ukraine – Officials reported on Wednesday that at least six people have died, including a mother and her two young daughters, due to extensive Russian drone and missile strikes throughout Ukraine. This devastating assault comes as efforts led by the U.S. to negotiate an end to the conflict appear to be stalling. Ukraine’s president is calling for increased military support.

The attacks, consisting of multiple waves of missiles and drones, struck at least eight cities, including a village near Kyiv. An airstrike in that area ignited a fire in the home of a woman and her daughters, aged six months and twelve years, according to Mykola Kalashnik, the head of the region.

In Kyiv alone, at least 18 individuals were reported injured, according to local authorities.

The assault began during the night and continued into Wednesday morning, targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and leading to widespread blackouts. Officials indicated that Russia aims to weaken the nation’s power grid as winter approaches.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s initiatives to resolve the conflict that commenced over three years ago, following Russia’s full-scale invasion, have not gained traction. Trump has expressed ongoing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin for not altering his stance even after Ukraine suggested a ceasefire and direct negotiations.

On Tuesday, Trump mentioned that a planned quick meeting with Putin was postponed because he wanted to avoid “wasting time.”

In response, President Zelensky has urged the European Union, the U.S., and the Group of Seven to increase pressure on Russia, insisting that only through sanctions, enhanced missile capabilities, and united diplomatic efforts can effective measures be taken.

Zelensky acknowledged Trump’s consideration of supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine as a potential motivator for Putin’s agreement to a meeting.

Later Wednesday, President Zelensky is set to visit Stockholm, where he will engage with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, marking the beginning of what he calls a week of intense diplomacy.

An EU summit in Brussels on Thursday is expected to discuss additional economic sanctions against Russia, while a meeting of a coalition supporting Ukraine is slated for London on Friday.

Also on Wednesday, President Trump is scheduled to meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House. The alliance is working on coordinating weapon deliveries to Ukraine, largely funded by Canada and various European nations.

In Kyiv, residents experienced fear as the city’s drone and missile strikes unfolded. Olena Viliukova, a 58-year-old local, recounted hearing a loud explosion, followed by shattering glass and pervasive fires. “It was very scary for the kids,” she said. “We never thought something like this would happen in our neighborhood.”

President Zelensky stated that the attacks impacted not only Kyiv but also Zaporizhia, Odessa, Chernihiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad, Poltava, Vinnytsia, and extensive areas of Cherkasy and Sumy.

In Dnipro district, two additional fatalities were reported, with emergency services saving ten individuals after a fire ignited on the sixth floor of a high-rise due to debris from a drone.

The strikes also damaged a medical facility and left debris scattered in a residential building, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko on his Telegram channel.

Emergency services reacted in the Dalnitsky district after debris from a drone crashed into a nearby high-rise, igniting a fire on the fifth floor that required the rescue of 15 individuals, including two children.

In a related development, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces indicated that they utilized a British-made Storm Shadow missile to strike a chemical production facility in Russia’s Bryansk region on Tuesday night. This factory plays a significant role in Russia’s military-industrial operations, generating gunpowder, explosives, missile fuel, and ammunition.
