Six high school students in Georgia were hospitalized following a high-speed rollover crash, with two sustaining serious injuries. The incident occurred on a notoriously dangerous road.
The Georgia State Patrol reported that a teenage boy driving a 2021 Honda Accord lost control while navigating a curve on Vaughn Road in Newman, roughly 40 miles southwest of Atlanta.
The car collided with a utility pole before crashing into a large tree.
A local resident recalled, “I heard a bang, and then the lights went out. I knew something had happened.” They further noted that the sounds of the kids inside trying to escape only deepened their concern.
Students from Northgate High School were taken to different hospitals, and two teenage girls were airlifted to a nearby medical facility in critical condition.
Local news footage captured tire tracks by the crash site, illustrating the severity of the accident. The wrecked sedan was almost unrecognizable, its front end completely destroyed.
Debbie Canup, a long-time resident of the area, commented on the behaviors of drivers saying, “It looks like they’re coming on two wheels.” She also mentioned the ineffective signs meant to control speed, noting that “eye candy” doesn’t effectively deter speeding.
The school district addressed the accident in a letter to parents, expressing support for the victims’ families and offering counseling for students. Yet, some parents were perplexed about why the students were not in school at the time of the crash.
Parent Tarell Pledger expressed concern about how this incident would impact the students, stating that it was important to understand the details and how the kids might be feeling.
This area has a troubled past, having been the site of several deadly accidents. A crash in 2016 resulted in one teenager’s death, while another fatal accident occurred in 2023.
