A long-standing mystery linked to a gruesome discovery in the California wilderness has reached a resolution, some 30 years later.
The name George Krusely had faded from the memory of investigators until advancements in DNA analysis and genetic genealogy connected him to a partial skull found by loggers near Putt Lake in Nyack back in 1994.
Krusely was born on April 30, 1929, and his last known whereabouts were in California in 1963, as reported by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.
On July 7, 1994, a skull was found at a remote campsite in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
Detectives estimated that the remains had been there for quite some time, likely upwards of a year.
Despite collecting evidence, the investigation quickly stalled due to insufficient information about the circumstances of the man’s death.
Eventually, authorities filed the case in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, estimating the man’s age to be between 50 and 60.
A significant breakthrough occurred in December 2024 when Placer County investigators partnered with the California Department of Justice and Othram Inc., which specializes in advanced DNA testing.
With Othram’s help, scientists developed a comprehensive DNA profile of the deceased.
This genetic data was then forwarded to the Investigative Genetic Genealogy Center at Ramapo College the following month.
Rather than merely seeking a name, the team used the genetic information to trace family tree branches backward.
This task was particularly complex due to the unidentified man’s ancestral roots in Croatia and Yugoslavia.
Cairenn Binder, director of Ramapo’s IGG Center, noted the challenges posed by the low representation of these ancestries in DNA databases and the limited genealogy records available.
In December 2025, the Ramapo team identified Krusely as a likely match. Investigators found a living descendant, and with assistance from the Lordstown Police Department in Ohio, they secured a DNA sample.
The match confirmed that the remains belonged to Krusely. However, authorities are still uncertain about the length of time he was deceased by the time his remains were discovered in 1994.
