On Friday's “PBS NewsHour,” new york times Columnist David Brooks said he believes Special Counsel Jack Smith was right to dismiss the case against President-elect Donald Trump, saying, “The bigger danger is that the trial will be used as a political weapon in the coming years.'' It is to be used as such.”
“Generally speaking, I don't think anyone is clearly above the law,” Brooks said. “And in my opinion, if a sitting president commits a horrible crime like murder or extortion, In this particular case, parts of the trial in New York and Georgia in particular seemed a little political, Donald Trump said. “I'm doing it,” he said as he ran. Kamala Harris has talked a lot about the trial. So it was right in the middle of the election. And 75 million Americans decided that wasn't a disqualification. And while I understand that, in my view, there is a danger in putting him above the law, the greater danger to me is the use of the trial as a political weapon in the coming years. So, overall, I think Jack Smith did the right thing. ”
He added: “I think we need to respect our democracy and the precedent of not using trials as a political football. And when you start to erode that precedent, you get very close to the point where you start using trials as a political football.'' I think we're getting close to that,” he added. . And that would be terrible for our politics and our justice system. ”
Brooks added: “There's no way Jack Smith would have done anything to destroy the rule of law in this country. That wasn't it — what he did was not an accusation. It wasn't a vengeance. I didn't. I was just trying to follow the law.”
