New York Mayoral Candidate Hires Security Amid Safety Concerns
The Democratic candidate for New York City’s mayoral primary, Zoran Mamdani, has recently enlisted private security after advocating for a reduction in police presence. It’s a notable shift, especially as he navigates between the first and second spots in the race and has spent $8,000 on security from a local company this June.
Reports indicate that Mamdani stands out for firmly holding to his stance, unlike others in the running, who have veered back toward supporting law enforcement. His proposal includes establishing a “Community Safety Bureau” with a whopping $1.1 billion budget aimed at alleviating pressure on the police by enhancing mental health services and violence prevention initiatives. Under this plan, dispatchers would decide the best responders—be it counselors, medical professionals, or police officers—when 911 calls are made.
This approach has sparked criticism from various quarters, including the New York Times editorial board, which argued that Mamdani would downplay the crucial role of the police. As for his current situation, Mamdani cited a rise in threats against him, particularly of a racist and anti-Muslim nature. He shared a disturbing message he received that stated, “The only good Muslim is a dead Muslim.”
Mamdani has expressed strong views about the NYPD, referring to it as a “corrupted” institution that should be dismantled to end the cycle of violence. Yet, during a recent debate, he faced accusations from opponents suggesting he was in favor of cutting police funding. In his defense, Mamdani clarified, “I will not refund the police. I work with the police because I believe that police play an important role in creating public safety.”
The primary is scheduled for June 24th, and the political landscape is certainly heating up as candidates position themselves on safety and law enforcement issues.
