Socialist Government Violates Diversity Standards by Choosing Male Porn Actor Who Identifies as Female

Resignation of Colombian Minister of Equality

Juan Carlos Florian, a former gay porn actor identifying as a “female,” resigned from his role as Colombia’s Minister of Equality on Wednesday. This decision comes amidst ongoing lawsuits alleging that his appointment violated the country’s legal requirements for “gender equality.”

Florian has been an advocate for LGBTQIA2 rights and is closely associated with President Gustavo Petro’s far-left administration. He had only recently taken up the Minister of Equality position in August. Florian’s self-identification as a “female” stirred controversies, as he described himself as “a person and af*ggot,” but clarified that he does not identify as gay.

Shortly after his appointment, Florian expressed a desire to embrace a “non-hegemonic” gender identity, which included wanting to be called “Ministra” instead of “Ministro,” the traditional male term for minister. His background includes a history as a sex worker, being HIV positive, and being an immigrant.

Florian’s resignation was influenced by ongoing litigation filed in the Administrative Court in Cundinamarca by law student Juan Manuel Lopez. The lawsuit argues that representation in high government offices should reflect a strict 50/50 gender ratio. Currently, the government features 10 male pastors compared to nine female ministers, creating an imbalance that the lawsuit seeks to address, particularly highlighting Florian’s situation as a man.

The court ruled on Monday to provisionally suspend Florian from his ministerial duties. President Petro publicly criticized the court’s decision as “unnecessary” and “homophobic,” arguing that it disregarded essential principles of freedom concerning personal identity. He insisted that his cabinet supports equality regardless of gender identity.

In Petro’s view, the argument against Florian’s appointment is an act of homophobia and compromises individual freedoms. He stressed that those who identify as male or female should be able to express that identity freely.

Florian’s legal team contended that discrimination is at play, attempting to enforce a binary gender structure upon him. They also claimed that recognizing Florian’s fluid identity reflects a broader understanding of government representation—asserting that the ministerial makeup consists of 9 women, 9 men, and Florian’s gender fluidity.

The Ministry of Equality itself, established under Petro’s government in June 2023, has faced ongoing scrutiny. The initial minister, Vice President Francia Marquez, resigned in February 2024 following controversies related to the administration, including contentious comments regarding drug legalization. Since then, she has distanced herself from the government’s more radical leftist moves.

In a recent interview, Marquez revealed that she was initially instructed by Petro to appoint Florian as Deputy Minister of Diversity, but she felt that this could expose her to violence and thus opted to resign. Subsequently, she was replaced by activist Carlos Rozero, showing the administration’s attempts to push forward despite internal conflicts.

Following Florian’s resignation, Colombian presidential sources reissued his resume on their website, leading some to speculate this might be an effort to reintegrate him into the government. Meanwhile, Carina Murcia was appointed as the new Minister of Technology.

Interestingly, the public document from the Ministry of Equality still lists Florian as “male,” further complicating the narrative around his identity.
