Canine or Lion? A Misunderstanding in the Irish Woods
Some locals in Ireland thought they were seeing a lion on the prowl.
A “lion-like creature” roaming the forests of County Clare led to an extensive investigation by the police. However, it turned out to be nothing more than a dog sporting an unusual hairstyle and an ironically fitting name, as police explained on Tuesday.
Residents in this west Irish region initially believed they were seeing things. They reported spotting a furry, tan animal with a mane-like appearance and a fluffy tail wandering through the woods.
From a distance, many said the creature resembled a lion. Numerous people living in this tranquil countryside reported their sightings to the Irish National Police, known as Gardaí.
Beginning their inquiry on October 29, authorities quickly identified the supposed lion as a Newfoundland dog with a, let’s say, unconventional haircut that closely mimicked the appearance of the majestic big cat.
“Gardaí in Killaloe have determined that a recent video showing this ‘lion-like’ creature in a forest in East Clare actually features a very friendly dog named ‘Mouse’,” officials stated in their announcement.
Officers even shared photos of this furry suspect, appearing slightly embarrassed—or maybe just pleading—about the mix-up.
Interestingly, animal rights activists didn’t find much to laugh about in this situation. They expressed concern over the dog’s grooming, explaining that Newfoundlands typically shouldn’t be shaved unless there’s a health issue. Their dense coats are essential for regulating body temperature and shielding their skin, and shaving can lead to health issues like sunburn or overheating.
As one activist noted, the community is relieved to confirm that Mouse is safe and is, in fact, just a dog—a welcoming revelation that reassures people who may have been anxious about an actual lion roaming nearby.
Interestingly, lions are not native to Ireland’s wet and temperate climate and are typically found only in captivity in major zoos across the country. In the past, there have been a few unusual incidents involving lions in Ireland; for example, a lion trainer once kept a lioness in his Dublin home back in 1951, leading to a chaotic encounter with local authorities.
More recently, in August 2024, a zookeeper in Northern Ireland found himself trapped in a cage while lions were nearby. Thankfully, he managed to escape unharmed, prompting an investigation by the local council overseeing the zoo.
