Some Sanctuary Policies ‘Went Way Too Far’ and Are Dangerous

On NewsNation's “Dan Abrams Live” on Monday, John Sandweg, who served as acting ICE director under President Obama, said “some of these sanctuary policies go too far” and “compromise public safety.” It will damage it.”

Cities like Denver probably can't do “as much as the mayor thinks,” Sandweg said, adding: More progressive cities will emerge and make bold statements about how to limit immigration enforcement in their cities. They cannot stop federal agents from enforcing federal laws in the city. That is, if ICE wants to do the following:[n] Generally speaking, the mayor cannot stop the community clean-up activities in which they go door-to-door because of the supremacy clause. But one area where mayors can be very influential is access to prisons. Currently, 90 to 95 percent of arrests within ICE are from prisons and jails, including all state prisons and jails. They also rely on access to those prisons to get immigrants there, where they are already… literally sitting there and being held captive. But they also rely on information. ICE relies heavily on information from the criminal justice system. The mayor can limit it. Therefore, they could seriously damage ICE's ability to carry out this mass deportation program, but perhaps not as much as some political rhetoric suggests. ”

He added: “I think there are some restrictions that are fair enough…If you're booked for driving without a license and we booked you because you don't have valid identification. So if we're just trying to find out who you are. That was the case, and the mayor said, ICE, you can't take them, it causes fear, so it takes them, now the victims say when the immigrant spouse beats them. You're probably calling because you're scared, and those are legitimate concerns. But I also agree with you. Listen, some of these sanctuary policies go too far and if you house a convicted murderer, locally they'll say he's a convicted murderer, but even if he Even if you're a foreigner, we're not going to turn you over to ICE. Clearly, they compromise public safety. ”
