Son says father confessed to attacking wife during FaceTime in Hawaii trial

Doctor's wife claims he attempted to push her off a cliff during a hike in Hawaii

Police Body Camera Captures Disturbing Scene After Alleged Attack

Graphic footage from police body cameras displayed Ariel Koenig in a state of distress on a hiking trail, covered in blood, as bystanders rendered aid. This incident occurred shortly after the alleged attack, where her husband, Gerhard Koenig, is accused of assaulting her. The footage showcased incredible moments of fear and confusion, providing jurors with a stark glimpse into the aftermath.

During the trial in Hawaii, a jury was presented with testimony from Emil Koenig, who recounted a FaceTime call with his father, Gerhard, who confessed to attempting to kill Ariel. The chilling moment unfolded shortly after the alleged incident, with Emil describing how his father appeared with blood on his shirt and made alarming statements about jumping off a cliff to avoid capture.

Emil noted that the conversation took place after the purported attack near the Pali Puka Trail on Oahu in March 2025, emphasizing his father’s claims about infidelity and his intention to leave, disregarding the needs of his younger children. He discussed the unsettling nature of the calls, during which Gerhard repeated accusations against Ariel and expressed a sense of hopelessness.

The jury learned that the first call from Gerhard occurred around 10:42 a.m., where he signaled he wouldn’t return home, describing Ariel’s alleged unfaithfulness. About an hour later, during a follow-up FaceTime call, Emil saw blood on Gerhard’s shirt, which he claimed was from Ariel. Gerhard also mentioned that Ariel had been unfaithful for several months, adding more complexity to the evolving narrative.

As the trial progressed, prosecutors highlighted key aspects of Emil’s testimony, indicating a lack of self-defense assertions from Gerhard during the calls. This is critical, as the defense argues that Ariel initiated the confrontation. Emile’s statements provided insight into his father’s state of mind at that tumultuous time, although he confirmed that, at first, things seemed surprisingly normal that morning.

Throughout his son’s testimony, Gerhard reportedly displayed no visible emotion. Meanwhile, law enforcement detailed digital evidence gathered from Gerhard’s devices, showcasing troubling searches related to infidelity and the investigation surrounding the incident.

Investigators found late-night searches linked to topics of betrayal, divorce, and related forums, including posts showing deep personal conflict and distress. Furthermore, a voice-activated recorder was purchased, with searches indicating preoccupation with remote hiking locations, particularly those known for their risky cliffs.

Family testimonies suggested a progressively strained relationship, with Ariel’s stepfather commenting on a perceived improvement before the incident. Nevertheless, tensions were palpable, with emotional distance previously evident between the couple. The defense continues to argue that the incident arose from Ariel’s actions, maintaining that this narrative should be considered in the jury’s ultimate decision.
