Sophie Cunningham’s Message on Faith Amid Contract Negotiations

Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham took to social media this week to share her thoughts on faith just as the WNBA’s new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) deadline nears.

After a season cut short by injury, Cunningham, now facing free agency, encouraged her followers on X to “be bold and brave!” Her post included the line, “Jesus is King,” and urged everyone to focus on what is true and fair, adding, “Don’t give up. By doing good. Be bold and have courage!”

The WNBA veteran has been open about her beliefs online, frequently sharing messages reflecting her faith. These recent statements come at a time when negotiations for a new CBA are progressing, and there’s uncertainty regarding her future with the Fever.

Cunningham has been particularly vocal during the CBA discussions, criticizing WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert over comments related to the league and star player Caitlin Clark. She expressed her frustration by stating, “I’m just fed up with our league. They need to step up and get better.” She went on to say that the league’s leadership needs accountability, claiming that some in powerful positions may excel in business but lack essential basketball knowledge.

Her comments followed allegations from WNBPA Vice President Nafeesa Collier that during a private conversation, Engelbert suggested Clark should be thankful for the opportunities provided by the league, especially regarding salary discussions. Engelbert has denied these claims. The ongoing issues regarding player compensation and officiating have complicated negotiations.

The players’ association had previously agreed to an eight-year contract in 2020, but in the past year, they voted to exit that agreement early. The initial expiration date was set for October 31, but negotiations have now been pushed to November 30.

According to a source familiar with the talks, the latest proposal includes revenue sharing and a maximum annual salary exceeding $1.1 million for one or more players per team, with annual growth expected. Additionally, the minimum salary will be increased to over $220,000, raising the average to more than $460,000.

Cunningham is on track to become a free agent in 2026 after signing a one-year deal with Indiana. Her debut season was cut short due to an MCL injury requiring surgery.
