The tragic deaths of two mothers whose bodies were found in a Jeep that sank in a Michigan river have resonated deeply with their community. Vanessa Bautista, 24, and Alexa Navarro, 23, both from South Bend, Indiana, were discovered dead after their vehicle was removed from the St. Joseph River in Niles, Michigan, on Tuesday night.
According to Bautista’s obituary, she was a “devoted” mother to her two sons, who meant everything to her. It noted, “Vanessa’s greatest joy in life was being a mother. Her sons were her entire world, and she loved them with all her heart.” It emphasized her dedication to ensuring they were happy and well cared for.
Described as having a warm personality and a “beautiful soul,” Bautista was also looking forward to the birth of her sister’s baby. Shared memories highlight her playful teasing of her sister Michelle about not letting the baby arrive on her own birthday, which was just days before the unfortunate incident.
The Jeep reportedly fell off an embankment into the river around 4 a.m. on Sunday, as Niles Police Chief James Millin explained. The pair was reported missing that same day, leading to an urgent search effort in the southwestern Michigan area near the Indiana border.
Authorities are currently investigating if the two women were “chased” or “followed” prior to their disappearance, but the specific cause of their deaths remains unconfirmed.
