A South Carolina police officer has been placed on administrative leave after he struck and killed a 66-year-old woman on a Myrtle Beach beach with his vehicle, police said.
The woman, identified as Sandra “Sandy” Schultz Peters, was on the beach around 1pm on Thursday when she was struck by a police pickup truck and died at a local hospital.
“I heard someone scream, ‘Someone has been hit,'” said a passerby. Dennis Miller told WBTW-TV.“We ran over here and, yeah, there was a woman on the ground with a truck on top of her.”
Horry County police called the incident a “tragedy.” Facebook statement.
“We have a responsibility to ensure that investigations, both external and internal, are carried out without delay or obstruction,” the ministry said.
“Horry County Police are providing all access and information necessary for the South Carolina Highway Patrol to complete their investigation,” the post stated. “The officers involved have currently been placed on administrative leave.”

Highway Patrol investigators returned to the beach again Friday and flew a drone over the scene.
A similar incident occurred in Horry County in 2020, when a woman lying on a beach in nearby Garden City was hit and injured by a police car, according to WBTW.
