South Carolina man convicted of killing 5 while under the influence of meth discovers his sentence

Man Receives Life Sentence for Triple Homicide

A man, identified as James Douglas Drayton, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after pleading guilty to killing five people in a South Carolina home known for drug-related activities. Authorities stated that Drayton, 28, was under the influence of methamphetamine and had not slept for several days at the time of the October 2022 incident.

Drayton’s attorney, Barry Barnett, confirmed that the guilty plea was part of an agreement with prosecutors, who chose not to pursue the death penalty. Drayton has expressed his intention not to appeal the decision, which means he will serve life in prison for his actions.

The motive behind the killings was not disclosed by prosecutors. However, Drayton reportedly told investigators that his drug use and lack of sleep contributed to the murders. Barnett mentioned that all five victims were shot at close range, and some were still in bed when Drayton inflicted the fatal wounds.

Former Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright commented on the tragic event, emphasizing that, regardless of their circumstances, the victims were loved ones to someone—”children of God” who did not deserve such a fate.

Drayton was apprehended the day after the murders, following a police chase in Burke County, Georgia, about 145 miles from the scene of the crime. Authorities noted that he was driving one of the victims’ vehicles and that a firearm was used in the homicides.

The families of the victims, who included Thomas Wayne Ellis Anderson, 37; James Derrick Baldwin, 49; Mark Alan Hewitt, 59; Adam Daniel Morley, 32; and Megael Rocha, 19, expressed their support for the plea deal, highlighting the profound impact Drayton’s actions have had on their lives.
