Southern Baptist Convention resolution urges reversal of same-sex marriage decision

Southern Baptist Congress Adopts Resolution on Marriage and Family

This week, the Southern Baptist Congress approved a significant resolution regarding marriage and family, specifically in relation to same-sex unions.

Titled “On Restoring Moral Clarity Through Divine Designs for Gender, Marriage, and Family,” the document calls for the overturning of various laws and court rulings, including the Obergefell v. Hodges decision, which the resolution claims contradicts God’s intentions for marriage and family.

The resolution is wide-ranging and emphasizes the importance of recognizing the biological differences between men and women. It advocates for laws that promote marriage as a union between one man and one woman, protect children from sexual predation, strengthen parental rights in both education and healthcare, encourage family formation in life-affirming ways, and ensure safety and fairness in athletic competitions.

It also addresses the issue of using “loopholes” for minors to undergo gender transitions without parental involvement.

The resolution urges parents to seek reimbursement for certain healthcare costs and push for public funding to support “life-affirming” healthcare providers.

This month marks the 10th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s contentious ruling that legalized same-sex marriage. According to the court’s opinion, “the Constitution does not allow same-sex couples to marry on the same terms as opposite-sex couples.”

Interestingly, during a press conference, Dr. Andrew Walker, who leads the resolution committee, acknowledged the challenges they face within the current cultural landscape. He noted that even within conservative circles, there seems to be a reluctance to advocate for traditional marriage.

He emphasized that the Southern Baptists are steadfast on the issue, aiming to encourage other conservative evangelicals as well.
