Southern Baptists Raise Ethical Concerns and Urge Restrictions on IVF

The Southern Baptist Convention’s mission passed a resolution on Wednesday urging lawmakers to restrict IVF and urging couples to exercise caution when considering the procedure because it involves “frozen human fetuses.” The resolution was passed at the Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meeting in Indianapolis, where federal and state lawmakers considered IVF legislation following the Alabama Supreme Court ruling restricting IVF. “We stand with couples who have been diagnosed with infertility and those currently struggling to conceive, acknowledging their sacred desire to have a child and encouraging them to consider the ethical implications of assisted reproductive technologies as they turn to God for hope, grace and wisdom in their suffering,” the resolution states. “…We commend couples who have made a sincere effort, at great expense, to use fertility treatments and reproductive technologies only in ways that honor the dignity of the human embryo, and who have accepted frozen embryos.”

“We pledge to pray on behalf of couples struggling with infertility to our God who hears, sees and remembers,” it reads.
