Virginia Governor’s Response to State of the Union

In her formal reply to the State of the Union, Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger criticized President Donald Trump’s mass deportation efforts, emphasizing her party’s commitment to “affordability,” despite the introduction of several new taxes in Virginia.

Spanberger, who took office recently after replacing conservative Governor Glenn Youngkin, is keen on promoting the idea of “affordability,” all while overseeing increased taxes from the Richmond Democratic Party.

Addressing the audience from the historic House of Burgesses in Colonial Williamsburg, Spanberger referenced the early collaboration among the colonies in 1705 and said, “America was founded on the idea that ordinary people can reject the unacceptable excesses of poor leadership, come together to demand better government, and build a nation that is a model for the world,” contrasting this with President Trump’s approach.

She noted, “Tonight, as I watched our members gather in a joint session of Congress, we were not going to hear the truth from our president,” and posed several rhetorical questions about the president’s effectiveness in making life more affordable, ensuring safety, and working for the American people.

Looking ahead to the upcoming election season in 2025, Spanberger mentioned her travels across Virginia discussing issues like housing, health care, energy, and child care, while blaming Trump’s tariff policies for rising costs and accusing Republicans of making life more expensive.

In response, Republicans have criticized Spanberger for supporting many tax increases, from new sales taxes to those targeting fantasy football operators.

Spanberger insisted that Virginia’s Democratic-led legislature is actively working to lower costs, stating, “But here in Virginia, we are working with our state legislature to reduce costs and make the commonwealth more affordable.” She added, “It’s not just me. Democrats across the country are focused on affordability in our nation’s capitals, state capitals, and communities.”

During her speech, Spanberger seemed to momentarily lose her place on the teleprompter but continued, “But as the president speaks tonight about what he perceives to be his successes, he continues to cede economic and technological power to Russia… kowtowing to China… kowtowing to the Russian dictator and planning war with Iran,” specifically citing China as a technological competitor.

In a moment of historical significance, as House Speaker Mike Johnson held George Washington’s gavel for the first time in State of the Union history, Spanberger also honored Washington, remarking on his warnings about ambitious leaders and encouraging unity among Americans for a “common cause.”

She concluded her speech by emphasizing the collective responsibility of citizens, saying, “That’s how we ensure that the State of the Union remains strong not just this year, but for the next 250 years.” Spanberger reiterated that “We the People” have the power to instigate change and demand more from the nation.
