The Caribbean has long been a popular spring break destination for Americans, and the islands feature a range of cultural experiences, high-end resorts, sunny beaches and other beloved tourist attractions.
The islands rely largely on tourism to help burn the economy. Caribbean tourism institutions estimate that in 2023 there were approximately 16.3 million nights of stays booked by US citizens.
Many Caribbean islands are considered safe for spring break, but tourists still need to pay attention in the area, according to former DEA senior special agent Michael Brown. cGlobal Director of Anti-Drug Technology at Rigaku Analytical Devices.
“The Caribbean is a great place for vacation, but we have to realize that it is one of the largest drug hubs in the Western Hemisphere,” Brown told Fox News Digital. “It's also one of the best places in the world, if not the best place to do, to wash your drug revenue and create an offshore account. So, it's a great place for vacations, but many of the islands. is compromised. More than others.”

Level 1 Travel Advisory
The State Department's Level 1 Travel Advisory represents the lowest security risk for travel. The department notes that travel has some risk, but conditions can always be different in countries outside the US.

The Caribbean Islands under the Level 1 Advisory Designation include Antigua and Barbuda, Alba, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Sintmarten, St. Kitz, Nevis and St. Lucia.

Level 2 Travel Advisory
Level 2 Travel Advisory warns tourists to “be aware of increased risks to safety and security.”
The Caribbean islands listed under Level 2 include the Bahamas, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, the Antilles of the Netherlands, the Turks and Caicos.

“In these areas, especially young women, these resorts are where predators look for unsuspecting individuals for vacation,” Brown said. “[Visitors] Maybe you're drinking it. You may choose to use narcotics. Their security guards were disappointed. The risks are somewhat the same. ”

Last year, the Turks and Caicos made headlines when five unsuspecting Americans were arrested and detained for several months after being caught in ammunition on the lining of their luggage. The Dominican Republic is a relatively safe and popular tourist destination for Americans, but it is the “Level 4” Haiti border. DR recently increased security at its border with Haiti.
“The Dominican Republic has important drug lords that drive large quantities of drugs from cartels. But the difference is that they believe that those groups understand the red lines that can affect tourism. And then the government will descend on them very violently,” Brown explained.
Level 3 Travel Advisory
According to the State Department, Jamaica is the only island in the Caribbean with a Level 3 travel advisory.

“I was in Jamaica recently for a conference. I stayed at a five-star resort and we were told. Never leave the resort,” recalls Brown. “Jamaica has perhaps one of the highest crime and murder rates in the Caribbean.”
If Americans venture outside resorts or hotels in high crime areas, they should consider using precautions to carry tracking devices like Apple Airtags.
“You can just disappear.”
He explained that when Americans are no longer within our borders, they no longer have access to “US protection.”

“We're probably dealing with a government that isn't worried about your safety, a government that has a certain level of corruption. You can just disappear,” Brown said.
Level 4 Travel Advisory
The only Caribbean country with a Level 4 travel advisory means that Americans are advised not to travel there as Americans can present “life-threatening risks” . Includes emergency situations. ”

In fact, the State Department encourages Americans currently on Level 4 territory to leave “as soon as they become safe.” The department also recommends that Americans from level four countries write a will before travelling to “leave DNA samples in worst case scenarios.”
“Under any circumstances, even people who work in the Peace Corps or church groups do not encourage them to go to Haiti.”
“It's completely lawless at this point,” Brown said of Haiti.
He said his neighbor, the PhD, is “taking extensive precautions to keep the bad elements of Haiti out of the Dominican Republic.”

Brown said that “major drug trafficking groups” operating within the Caribbean Islands will “run drugs through the Caribbean to support the cartels in Colombia, Peru and Mexico.”
“I don't want to be a vigilante, but in many cases drugs, sex traffickers and other criminal elements are based in the Caribbean. “That's what I call unsuspecting. It creates a very dangerous environment associated with individuals there to prey on it.”
