Wembanyama Shines in Game 1 Despite MVP Snub
Victor Wembanayama, the standout center for the Spurs, was eager to make his mark in the Western Conference Finals after losing the NBA MVP award to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander from the Oklahoma City Thunder.
In the playoffs, Wembanyama had already set personal bests, scoring 41 points and grabbing 24 rebounds. When reporters brought up his thoughts on Gilgeous-Alexander after the Spurs’ hard-fought 122-115 double-overtime victory in Game 1, he expressed that it felt personal.
During the post-game press conference, he was asked about being aware of Gilgeous-Alexander’s MVP victory and how much it fueled his performance. His response was simple yet pointed: “Yes, indeed, everything you just said.”
It was a significant moment for Wembanyama, who didn’t go into detail but certainly seemed to channel that disappointment into his game.
Gilgeous-Alexander, having been named MVP for the second consecutive year, outpaced both Wembanyama and three-time MVP Nikola Jokic. For Wembanyama, this served as literal motivation, leading to a historic debut game where he wowed the audience with impressive dunks and a few muscle flexes.
His clutch three-pointer with just 28 seconds left in the first overtime momentarily staved off defeat and pushed the game to a second overtime.
Finishing the match with those 41 points and 24 rebounds, Wembanyama secured a spot in the record books as the only player to achieve such statistics in a conference finals debut.
He also showcased his defensive skills with three blocks during the game.
On the Spurs’ side, rookie Dylan Harper made headlines too, scoring 24 points, alongside 11 rebounds, six assists, and an impressive seven steals. This performance marked him as the first rookie since Magic Johnson in 1980 to reach at least 15 points, five rebounds, and five steals in a playoff game.
On the flip side, Gilgeous-Alexander struggled that night, scoring 24 points with an inefficient 7-of-23 shooting performance. He acknowledged his need for improvement.
Looking ahead, Game 2 is set for Wednesday in Oklahoma City.
