Starving mountain lion caught in Southern California family's yard

A family in Southern California got quite a shock when they checked a trap meant for whatever was snatching their pets and found a mountain lion inside.

The Hernandez family had been noticing missing chickens and four of their cats from their backyard in Fallbrook, located in San Diego County. “There was a huge hole in the roof, and the chicken was gone, with feathers everywhere,” explained Sonia Hernandez.

Initially, they thought it was a coyote causing the trouble. In response, her father-in-law constructed a homemade trap to catch it. But what they discovered instead was a mountain lion, which they certainly hadn’t anticipated.

Concerned about their children’s safety, the family called 911. Wildlife officers arrived the following day to release the mountain lion back into its natural habitat. Sonia expressed that while she understood the authorities were adhering to regulations—which, in California, require that captured mountain lions be released in the same location—the family and their neighbors had hoped the cougar would be relocated somewhere else.

“We weren’t very happy because we thought about the kids and the animals,” she mentioned, adding a note of worry: “There’s definitely concern that it could happen again.”

Janet Villegas, a neighbor who takes care of horses, shared her apprehensions as well. “If you release an animal knowing there’s food out there, it’s likely to return,” she commented. “I often check on my animals in the evening, but I can’t help but wonder if the mountain lion is watching me from somewhere nearby.”

The unexpected encounter left the neighborhood buzzing, and it’s hard not to think about the potential for more surprises in the future, given the circumstances. What’s next for the Hernandez family? One can only imagine.
