State Department updates warning for Americans advising against travel to Russia

The State Department has recently reiterated its “do not travel” advisory regarding Russia. This advisory, which remains unchanged from previous versions, cites numerous high risks such as terrorism, arbitrary imprisonment, and inconsistent enforcement of laws as key concerns.

This warning comes amidst the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which shows no signs of letting up.

According to the advisory, the capacity for U.S. authorities to assist Americans in Russia is seriously limited due to reduced embassy staffing and the closure of the consulate general. They emphasize, “American citizens living in Russia should leave immediately,” pointing out that Russian officials frequently question and intimidate Americans without clear justification.

The advisory also mentions that there have been instances where Russian security forces have arrested U.S. citizens on dubious charges, asserting that these individuals were not treated fairly and lacked evidence in their convictions. Travelers are cautioned to reconsider bringing electronic devices into Russia, as communications are likely monitored.

Owing to sanctions, American debit and credit cards are ineffective in Russia, and transferring funds from the U.S. is nearly impossible.

Tourists planning to visit Russia have been advised to prepare for the potential of unforeseen detention. They should also take precautions such as logging out of social media accounts and refraining from accessing them during their stay. Creating a will and designating a beneficiary is also suggested.

In recent news, President Putin accused Ukraine of launching a significant drone attack on the presidential palace, stating that Russian defenses intercepted 91 drones during this incident. Russia’s Ministry of Defense has released footage relating to the drone attack, highlighting the military focus on protecting civilian areas.

The situation at the Russia-Ukraine border remains tense, under martial law since October 2022, allowing for curfews, property seizures, movement restrictions, detentions of foreigners, forced relocations, and limitations on public gatherings.

The advisory warns that Russian authorities have been known to interrogate and detain individuals for actions contrary to Russia’s interests.

In the last few weeks, the U.S. government has issued various travel warnings, including an alert about escalating tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, advising citizens to stay away from border areas where hostilities may occur.
