A Montana family reportedly lost custody of their teenage daughter after she objected to her identifying as the opposite sex.
A family is accusing Montana Child Protective Services of “kidnapping” their teenage daughter because they started identifying her as a “boy.” report By Reduxx.
Krista and Todd Kolstad, of Glasgow, Montana, told the outlet that their daughter had been taken away and is now scheduled to be sent to Canada.
Krista explained that the ordeal began in August 2023, when the family received a phone call saying their 14-year-old daughter Jennifer was talking about suicidal thoughts at school.
“She always had problems at school,” Krista said, adding that she and Todd had previously moved Jennifer between school districts in response to bullying issues to give Jennifer a “fresh start.” He pointed out that.
In the video, Todd echoed Krista’s sentiments, saying, “My 14-year-old daughter has been the victim of bullying at school for some time and has had a difficult time,” adding, “We “We have had numerous meetings with the school system over the years to try to address the issue,” he added. These problems. “

Todd went on to explain that in August 2023, he and Krista received a call from local police.
“I received a call that my 14-year-old daughter was texting a friend she met at a school track meet that she wanted to commit suicide,” he said. “We take this threat seriously and have discussed it with her daughter.”
Later that night, a caseworker from Montana Children and Family Services (CFS) showed up at the family’s home, spoke with Jennifer, and conducted an examination. Todd said a caseworker was invited to the home and documentation said it was “clean, well stocked with food, and in no immediate danger.”
Krista and Todd said the caseworker later allowed them to speak with Jennifer alone, but warned that the 14-year-old had “had a problem with lying for quite some time.” Ta.
In an interview with CFS, Jennifer claimed that she had ingested toilet bowl cleaner and painkillers in an attempt to commit suicide hours earlier.
Kolstad’s family said that was highly unlikely because Jennifer did not have access to those substances and was not showing or expressing any symptoms of an impending illness that day.
Still, they agreed that Jennifer would go to the hospital in case anything went wrong. Jennifer’s blood tests at the hospital showed no evidence of ingesting any toxic substances.
“When we arrived at the hospital, my daughter started demanding to be called ‘Leo,’ ‘he,’ and ‘him.’ We explained that this was in her history, but her That’s not something I agree with as parents,” Todd said. “The hospital staff ignored our requests. [CFS]”
From there, Jennifer was kept at the hospital for further observation.
Transgender-related medical procedures are prohibited in Montana, but the hospital continued to call Jennifer “Leo” and a boy, saying they were practicing in a “gray area” of the law, Krista said. Ta.
The hospital then monitored Jennifer 24/7 due to suspected suicide threats, and an aide was posted outside her door to explain how she realized she had undergone top surgery and that she was non-binary. “We started talking about it,” Krista added.
When Krista objected, the doctor dismissed her concerns and said, “Why aren’t you more worried about your daughter trying to hurt herself than what your aide is saying?” Is that so?” he asked. she said.
Krista went on to say that her experience at the hospital seemed like a constant effort by the staff to undermine her and Todd’s parental rights, right down to giving Jennifer junk food even though Krista asked them to stop. He explained.
In one instance, after Krista encouraged a 14-year-old boy to eat something healthy for lunch, a nurse yelled in the hallway, “Please feed this young man a banana split dessert” (Jennifer’s ).
At some point, Kolstad and CFS agreed that Jennifer needed to receive treatment and counseling in a specialized residential facility. But then the possibility of moving the 14-year-old boy to Wyoming was mentioned, Krista said.
The Kolstads researched Wyoming’s laws regarding minor transition and were concerned when they learned that children could be subjected to transgender-related medical procedures without parental consent. Then, hours after it was confirmed that Jennifer would be next admitted to a bed at a facility in Montana, she received word that Jennifer would be sent to Wyoming in her place.
“They called and said they had a bed available in Wyoming and Jennifer needed to go,” Krista said. “No one told us the name of the facility. No one answered our questions. We told them we wanted them to answer our questions before accepting the bed.”
Police and CFS arrived at the home 10 minutes later and picked up Jennifer for transport out of state.
“I was told the reason was because they were ‘unable to provide or refuse medical care.’ That’s not true,” Krista said.
To make matters worse, Todd and Krista were not allowed to speak directly to Jennifer while she was in Wyoming. They had to relay communications through counselors instead.
A month later, Jennifer was sent back to Montana and placed in a Youth Dynamics group home, where she has lived ever since. The court then reportedly decided to hand over custody of Jennifer to CFS at a hearing on January 19th.
“We were told that it was in her ‘therapeutic best interests’ to have Jennifer’s sex changed and live as a boy. And because we had no intention of following that recommendation, the court ruled that CFS gave custody of Jennifer for six months,” Krista said.
“CFS will now place Jennifer in the care of her biological mother in Canada, who was not a part of her life,” she added. “The judge told us, ‘You need to be prepared that your reunion with your family may not be what you expected.'”
Jennifer’s biological mother, Christine, reportedly left her child with Todd after Jennifer was born and has not been involved in her daughter’s care ever since.
Krista, who has lived with Jennifer since she was seven years old, said Christine “never called her to check on her.” [Jennifer] teeth. She never sent anything. there is nothing. “
Reduxx reports that of Todd and Christine’s five children, only one lived with them in Canada until they were too old to care for Christine. While living with Christine, the boy displayed severe behavioral problems, so Christine sought help from Todd and Krista.
In one conversation, Christine reportedly admitted that she regularly checked homeless camps and police records, expecting to find her son on the street or in jail.
“Our family has been destroyed by this,” Krista said. “We have very little contact with Jennifer and our rights are being violated as her parents are being trampled on.”
“We will continue to fight,” she added. “We will never give up on our daughter or what we believe is morally right. Even though we are currently in contempt of court, we will continue to tell our story. We will continue to work hard to prevent other families from experiencing this.”
“Our biggest fear is that our daughter will become a victim of this system and ultimately take her own life,” Krista said.
