State Rep. Andrew Ireland: Indiana University Initiative Collaborated with Organization Connected to Hamas

Indiana University Initiative Under Scrutiny

The Indiana University initiative is designed to train international individuals in leading NGOs focusing on Muslim communities globally, according to state Rep. Andrew Ireland (R-Ind.) in a recent interview.

Ireland discussed the university’s Islamic Philanthropy Initiative, which he described as aimed primarily at educating people from other nations on fundraising and leadership within organizations dedicated to Islamic causes.

“It’s been nothing but a setback for the university,” he noted. Last year, the initiative had to apologize for inviting an individual linked to supporting a Palestinian terrorist group. This created significant concerns, especially since some partners involved are connected with Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.

“I think the Washington Free Beacon was the first to break this when the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on the organization earlier this year. Indiana University had been conducting various programs with them, prompting me and other concerned members of the Indiana General Assembly to speak up and demand an investigation,” he explained. “Upon learning of the situation, the university promptly suspended the initiative and ultimately shut down the Islamic philanthropy efforts.”

According to Ireland, major public research institutions like Indiana University should prioritize issues relevant to the state.

“Instead, this initiative has dedicated the last decade to hosting global conferences, effectively training other Islamic NGOs on financial strategies and leadership,” he said. This, he believes, reflects a wider issue of what he terms a “woke virus” affecting universities nationwide.

“There’s a bigger problem in play here. This kind of mindset seems to benefit everyone except the actual goal we should be focusing on. It’s about educating the next generation in Indiana. State universities are meant to prepare people for careers and support family life,” he remarked.

Ireland further stated, “It’s really troubling that they’re using time and resources to train Islamic organizations, particularly those allegedly connected to radical Islamic groups.”

State representatives are examining Hayat Yor, which the U.S. Treasury Department highlighted at the beginning of this year for its connections to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.

“This organization was actively collaborating with IU and others, essentially co-sponsoring these initiatives. It’s a clear example of issues that the public needs to be aware of,” he mentioned, pointing out the need for vigilance against such practices.

“I’m relieved they took action. IU conducted an investigation, uncovered the reality, and shut down the program. Incidents like this should not occur at any public university, especially at Indiana University, which I hold dear as my alma mater.”
