Eviction Moratorium Call in Minnesota
Minnesota State Senator Omar Fateh has urged the governor to implement a temporary ban on evictions, aiming to support “neighbors” facing challenges under the pressure of potential deportation.
The current administration is reportedly intensifying immigration enforcement in Minnesota due to increasing indications of welfare and relief fraud within the Somali community.
In a social media statement on Monday, Fateh expressed that the situation is dire. He stated, “People are afraid to leave their homes for work, and many are now struggling to make ends meet.” He believes the governor, Tim Walz, should take action to limit evictions during this crackdown.
Fateh emphasized, “Minnesota is in a state of emergency. Our neighbors are scared to go to work; it’s really a tough time for many.” He called for collective action, saying, “Minnesotans are already doing their part to help those in distress; now it’s time for the governor to act.”
Reactions on social media have been mixed, with some expressing disdain for the proposal. One commenter questioned the legitimacy of those concerned about going to work, implying that perhaps there’s more to their fear. Another remarked, “If they’re afraid, maybe they’re involved in something illegal.”
Adding to this sentiment, a labor union in Los Angeles has voiced support for a similar moratorium, advocating for protection of undocumented immigrants who cannot work without fear of deportation.
Senator Fateh, who is the child of Somali immigrants, gained recognition through his campaign for mayor of Minneapolis, though it was ultimately unsuccessful. Democratic-Farmer-Labor Mayor Jacob Frey won the election by a significant margin.
Related discussions are growing around the impact of Somali immigrants on Minnesota’s economy.
Furthermore, Walz has been accused of hindering investigations into the fraud case related to the Somali community, which he has denied, stating he initiated a criminal inquiry into the matter. Meanwhile, Minnesota Republicans have already drafted articles for impeachment against him.
