Three states governed by Republicans are deploying National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., in response to President Trump’s crackdown on crime in the capital.
Next week, Trump announced a public safety emergency for the city, aiming to unite local law enforcement with federal support, including the National Guard. So far, around 1,100 National Guard members from six states have been mobilized, largely due to a request from the Trump administration, and with the understanding that the federal government will cover costs. They’re expected to arrive in D.C. shortly.
This addition will complement the 800 National Guard troops that were already stationed in D.C. last week, along with various federal agencies here to enhance law enforcement efforts.
This indicates a significant national security presence in the capital.
Louisiana
Governor Jeff Landry has authorized around 135 members of the Louisiana National Guard to travel to D.C.
In a social media statement, he emphasized, “Our capital reflects the respect, beauty, and standards of our nation. We cannot overcome cities through violence and lawlessness.” He expressed pride in supporting the mission of restoring safety in Washington, D.C., and similar efforts across the country.
Mississippi
On Monday afternoon, Governor Tate Reeves announced he would dispatch 200 Mississippi National Guard soldiers to the capital.
Reeves remarked, “It’s clear that crime is out of control there and something has to be done to fight it.” He believes Americans should have a safe capital to take pride in. The National Guard, he mentioned, excels in enhancing public safety and aiding law enforcement.
Tennessee
Governor Bill Lee has sent approximately 160 members of the Tennessee National Guard to D.C. this week.
A spokesperson indicated that these guards will collaborate with local and federal forces to maintain safety, conduct community patrols, manage traffic, and oversee federal facilities. The duration of their stay will depend on the ongoing needs.
West Virginia
On Saturday night, Governor Patrick Morrisey revealed plans for the state National Guard to provide “mission essential equipment, professional training, and around 300-400 skilled personnel” to assist local officials.
Major General Jim Seward commented, “This initiative aligns with our commitment to our community.” He mentioned readiness to support partners in the national capital and contribute to making it a cleaner, safer environment.
South Carolina
Governor Henry McMaster approved the deployment of about 200 National Guard members from South Carolina to the capital. He noted that the federal government would take care of the expenses.
This announcement came amid warnings of Hurricane Erin affecting the East Coast. While the storm isn’t expected to strike the U.S. mainland, forecasters predict potential coastal flooding and strong winds.
McMaster explained that if natural disasters impact South Carolina, the National Guard would be able to return home quickly to assist.
Ohio
Governor Mike DeWine announced Saturday that around 150 military police officers from the Ohio National Guard have been deployed following a request from Army Secretary Dan Driscoll’s office.
DeWine added that these officers will perform patrol duties and provide additional security but clarified that they are not operating as law enforcement in Ohio at this time.
