Smith Show” which broadcasted from the FanaticsFest sports convention in New York, he expressed his concerns about the growing influence of politics in sports. Specifically, he pointed out the ongoing discourse surrounding WNBA player Caitlin Clark and urged fans to avoid becoming “divisive.”
Speaking candidly, Smith referenced Clark’s situation and criticized how political narratives have shaped the discussion around her performance and treatment in the media. “This is America,” he emphasized. “Despite all our issues, people around the world still see this as a land of opportunity. We can’t let politicians intrude on sports and deepen these divisions.”
Smith expressed his worry over NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s description of Clark’s situation as “political ping pong,” suggesting it might further inflame tensions. He articulated the risk that such comments could exacerbate conditions that make people take sides, which, in his view, shouldn’t happen.
In his remarks, he implored Clark and her fellow WNBA players to unite, rather than focus on differences, which he believes only intensifies the argument. “Caitlin Clark is not your enemy,” he pointed out. “She is part of your community.” Smith called for the WNBA’s leadership to foster unity among players, urging them to tell politicians to focus on their responsibilities and refrain from meddling in sports. His worry is clear: if we allow outside influences to dictate the narrative, it could lead us down a dangerous path.
On the other hand, prominent political leaders have chimed in, with comments ranging from support to criticism concerning the treatment of Clark. Representative Tim Burchett stated his belief that Clark should be recognized for her achievements, while others have voiced concerns about potential bias against her in the league.
More recently, former President Donald Trump praised Clark, calling her “amazing” and criticizing Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas, who was suspended after a foul during a game with Clark. His remarks added another layer to the ongoing discussion about Clark’s role in the WNBA.
