Stephen A Smith Claims Trump Is Correct in Tightening Border Security After Biden Eased Restrictions

Stephen A. Smith Mulls 2028 Democratic Bid, Comments on Trump

Stephen A. Smith, a well-known figure from ESPN, seems to be reigniting his interest in pursuing the Democratic nomination for the 2028 election. Curiously, he’s been publicly praising President Trump in this context.

In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Smith indicated that he’s nearing a decision regarding his candidacy and acknowledged Trump’s actions concerning border security during Biden’s administration, which he characterized as an open-door policy.

“I aim to announce my decision at the start of 2027, but I’m not ruling anything out since I foresee significant success ahead. And, when I achieve enough success to ensure my comfort for life, well, good luck to everyone else,” he explained.

On his views about Trump, he stated, “I don’t agree with everything I see, but I can’t say that everything he does is wrong.”

He further elaborated, “The border needed to be secured. Trump was right in that regard, but only due to Biden’s previous decisions. Had Biden followed Obama’s policies and increased deportations beyond what Trump did during his first term, I might not have commented at all.”

Smith described the urgency of the situation: “When we have 12 to 15 million individuals crossing the border illegally and disregarding the crisis at hand, it’s clear we needed action.”

According to a House Committee on Homeland Security report, “CBP has recorded over 10.8 million encounters nationwide since fiscal year 2021, with more than 8.72 million occurring at the Southwest border.”

Despite recognizing the necessity of border security, Smith hesitated to support Trump’s methods. He expressed concerns about ICE operations, saying, “We don’t like to see people being detained in the streets. It’s troubling how the term ‘criminal’ seems to shift to include anyone who crossed the border illegally, rather than focusing on those actually endangering citizens.”

Smith made it clear, “Under my watch, we won’t face a border crisis. The crime we see on the streets of New York is unacceptable. I won’t be advocating for defunding the police; that’s not on the table.”
