California Gubernatorial Race Heats Up

Steve Hilton, a Republican candidate for governor in California, believes the state is poised for significant change as he aims for a spot on the November ballot. His remarks came after securing a place in the general election.

Hilton, known for his conservative views and previous role as a Fox News host, will compete against Democratic candidate Xavier Becerra. “The good news is that in November we have an opportunity for change in a new direction, not four years of madness,” he noted during an appearance on “The Ingraham Angle.”

Expressing his satisfaction, he told Laura Ingraham, “I’m very happy, but there’s still work to do to turn this around, but I’m very excited. It’s a great night.” The stakes in California’s gubernatorial race are particularly high, with candidates vying to succeed a Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, who cannot run again.

Becerra, previously the Health and Human Services Secretary under Biden, enters the race with a strong advantage, as California boasts nearly twice as many registered Democrats as Republicans. Hilton, who has support from former President Trump, encapsulates his campaign with a straightforward message: change is coming.

His platform heavily critiques Democratic leadership. Hilton has voiced concerns over the state’s high cost of living, homelessness crisis, and elevated taxes. He also indicated that he would consider campaign support from Spencer Pratt, a former reality TV star who recently lost in the Los Angeles mayoral primary. Hilton described Pratt as having “the kind of energy” that conservatives need in their efforts.

It’s an interesting juxtaposition; while some residents are feeling the growing discontent with the current leadership, the dynamics of the race reveal a complex landscape. Hilton appreciates Pratt’s strong policies, especially regarding homelessness, saying, “It’s an absolute travesty that the city of Los Angeles doesn’t have the same options as the entire state.”

California’s unique jungle primary system allows all candidates to appear on one ballot, regardless of their party affiliation, with the top two advancing to the general election. If Hilton succeeds in November, he would become the first Republican governor since Arnold Schwarzenegger was re-elected in 2006.
